Young Carers

There are over currently over 10,000 Young Carers in Kent and according to BBC research, there could be another 30,000 hidden Young Carers! It is important that Young Carers know that they are not alone in their caring role.

As a school, we are aware that being a Young Carer can have a negative impact on a Young Person, affecting their confidence and self-esteem, educational attendance, attainment, and physical and mental health.

Kent Young Carers is the countywide service for Young Carers aged 5-18 across Kent.  Young Carers are taking on caring responsibilities for a family member with a long-term illness, disability, mental health or substance misuse issue.

We work with Kent Young Carers to reduce the negative and highlight the positive impact of being a carer such as increased resilience, empathy, non-judgemental attitude and caring nature.

While we have identified many children as Young Carers and referred them for support, we are aware there may be children in school that take on a caring role that we have yet to identify. If you feel your child may be a Young Carer, please contact the Family Support Team to discuss this further.
