Modern Foreign Languages
Learning a foreign language opens the door to a variety of different worlds, providing the children with a valuable social and cultural experience.
To enhance the children’s’ cultural capital we provide them with the opportunity to learn French across the school and Mandarin within a specific year group.

At the Brent Primary School, we believe that learning a language should be interactive and enjoyable; with speaking and listening taught prior to reading and writing. Children are taught French from Year 3 to Year 6 and are exposed to the French language on a weekly basis. Vocabulary is consistently consolidated throughout the week within the routine class environment. We have high expectations for correct pronunciation and the children are consistently encouraged to look for the similarities and connections between both English and French.
Additionally, Year 6 have the opportunity to attend a five day residential in France. This is an invaluable experience which allows them to consolidate their learning over KS2, within a real life scenario, inspiring them and fostering curiosity for future language learning.
